Of course my lap isn’t big enough. Of course you spill out of it and over the edges of the chair.
But don’t you see? That’s the point. That’s why I love it so much, that’s why I pull you into it so often, and pull my arms almost all the way around you, because you don’t quite fit those either. Not with your legs too, your knees against your chest and your head just a little higher than me.
Because you’re not as little as you feel, and you need to know that. You need to feel like a grown, beautiful woman at the same time as feeling like the smallest thing on this planet. I want both of those things, I want to cultivate that duality and make it flourish. I want you to be the littlest, most beautiful grown up sophisticated woman there ever was.
Sure it’s a contradiction. Of course it’s a bit of an oxymoron. But luckily you don’t have to occupy those twin states at the same time. Luckily, you can be both the sophisticated woman and the playful sweetheart over the course of time, moving between the two. Because it’s the one that makes the other worth it. It’s the knowledge that both exist in the same beautiful body that makes me so unequivocably enamoured with you.
So of course you don’t fit in my lap, you pretty little thing. Because you’re a beautiful grown woman. But you’re my beautiful grown woman, and that means you’re going to be in my lap a whole lot.
